Grants Help to Support Construction and Renovation for Several Local Nonprofits

The Hampton Roads Community Foundation awarded grants worth $2.5 million to multiple organizations to support construction and renovation projects and an environmental stewardship program.

Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia will receive $600,000 to support the construction of a new warehouse and administrative facility. The Foodbank recently purchased 24 acres of land in Virginia Beach to serve as the site of a new, expanded campus.

The Hunton YMCA will receive $600,000 to support building a new facility on the site of the former Tidewater Park Elementary School in Norfolk’s St. Paul’s area, which is under redevelopment.

 

 

The Foundation’s Board approved these Vibrant Places grants in March as well as:

$350,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Virginia to support major renovations. The photo at left shows upgrades at the Rosemont Club.

  • $300,000 to the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (artist's rendering above) to support capital expenses for its new facility on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University.
  • $200,000 to the Old Dominion Museum Foundation to support the Barry Art Museum expansion.
  • $100,000 to Mercy Chefs Inc. to support its campaign to build a teaching garden and outdoor kitchen in Portsmouth.
  • $70,000 to the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation to support the construction of a new digital media studio.
  • $50,000 to the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge Society to support construction of an outdoor classroom.
  • $40,000 to St. Mary’s Home to support facility renovations and updates.
  • $10,000 to Joy Ministries to support building renovations.

Norfolk Botanical Garden received an Environmental Stewardship grant of $20,000 to support a floating wetland installation and environmental education programming.

Additionally, a grant of $204,366 will support the Minus 9 to 5 early childhood education initiative that began at the Foundation and is now housed at Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University.
