Philanthropy Stories
Stories of generosity
The Hampton Roads Community Foundation has been fortunate to work with some of the biggest-hearted people in Hampton Roads. Some are well-known, like the late Josh Darden, who mentored hundreds if not thousands of community leaders.
Others did great deeds behind the scenes. Scientist and engineer Edward Knapp (E.K.) Sloane anonymously donated pianos to conservatories and schools during his lifetime. When he passed away in 1996, he left $4.5 million to the Community Foundation to continue the tradition. If you see a wonderful piano on any stage in Hampton Roads, say thank you to E.K. Sloane, an engineer who loved piano music but didn't play the instrument!
