Our Scholarship Recipients Are Extraordinary

Thanks to our generous scholarship donors, over the decades we have provided $21 million to help more than 4,400 students -- most for four years of study. Many of our donors did not attend college themselves but have made it possible for others to have extraordinary careers in medicine, engineering, education, social work and just about any field you can name.
This year, we have 413 students receiving more than $1.4 million in scholarships -- a record number of students and scholarships in a single year. The latest edition of our Good Tidings newsletter highlights past and current scholarship recipients making positive differences in the lives of others.

Featured are:
- Edna Scott Faulk (pictured), a retired Chesapeake Public Schools teacher and principal whose career shaped the lives of thousands of students. In 1959, Edna was among the first recipients of our Carrie Biggs Morrison Scholarship and our first recipient to attend an Historically Black College and University -- Elizabeth City State University. This year we have 27 Morrison Scholars and 20 students on scholarship at HBCUs.
- Dr. Robert Abbott, a former recipient of the Victor and Ruth N. Goodman Memorial Fund Scholarship at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Today, his medical practice and weekly podcast emphasize the healing powers of exercise, meditation and nutrition. This year we have 16 Goodman Scholars.
- Sarah Stermer, a new Joseph E. Harry and Bertha White Harry Scholarship recipient at Virginia Wesleyan University. Sarah, a freshman, has planted more than 3,000 trees in Virginia Beach and Haiti in her quest to improve the environment. Sarah is among 34 current Harry Scholars.
