Benefits of creating a DAF (H2)

With a contribution of $25,000 or more, you can create a charitable fund that enables you to:

  • Receive the maximum charitable deduction for your entire donation for the year you contribute. But you and your successors can then recommend grants for years. And, you can add to your fund at any time.
  • Recommend grants to nonprofit organizations in Hampton Roads or anywhere in the United States.
  • Explore giving opportunities with free research by our staff or site visits to nonprofits.
  • 24-hour secure, online access for recommending grants, checking fund balances, reviewing past grants, reading investment returns and more through Fund Xpress.
  • Name successor advisors.
  • Leave a lasting legacy in your name that benefits Hampton Roads when there are no more advisors.

Working in estate planning and administration I saw the virtues of having a family fund”

FEATURED STORY (h3)

Robert Nusbaum and Linda Laibstain Fund

As Hampton Roads nattives, Robert and Linda wanted the flexibility to recommend grants to specific nonprofits whose work resonated with their passions.

You have four options when opening a Donor-advised Fund

1. Endowed
An endowed fund allows you and one additional generation of successor advisors recommend grants. Your fund is invested to grow over time while enabling you to recommend annual grants to nonprofits. When you first establish your donor-advised fund, you choose which kind it will become at the end of the advising period, such as unrestricted, scholarship or field of interest. Read more about the benefits of endowment.

2. Current use
A current-use fund lets you will make one charitable gift to the Community Foundation and then recommend grants until you spend the balance of your fund. This is not considered an endowed fund since you can distribute the entire balance. (Note: Initial charitable contribution is $50,000 or more.)

3. Quasi-endowed
A flexible but permanent fund allows you to recommend grants to nonprofits, but your fund must maintain a minimum balance of at least $50,000. Your successor advisors have the same opportunity. When the advising period ends, your fund becomes a permanent fund with the purpose you specified. (As with a Current use fund, the initial charitable gift is $50,000 or more.)

4. Customized fund
Don't see what you want? We can work together to customize a donor-advised fund for you. (The initial charitable contribution is $2 million or more.)
