Nonprofit Stories

We tell your stories of nonprofit impact

Many people and many institutions contribute to preserving the best of Hampton Roads and seeking the ideal when change is needed. Community leaders, businesspeople, educators and medical personnel to name a few.

But we reserve a special place in our Story Bank and Video Bank for nonprofits benefiting from our grants and initiatives. Here are a few videos about area nonprofits to get you started.

Girls on the Run Hampton Roads

Girls on the Run Hampton Roads is helping girls at Brighton Elementary School in Portsmouth to be joyful, healthy and confident. The Brighton team is among more than 50 Girls on the Run Hampton Roads teams serving more than 750 elementary and middle-school girls throughout our region. A recent three-year $60,000 grant helped expand the 12-week program to five schools that receive federal Title I funding.

The Elizabeth River Project

With more than $300,000 from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, the Project transformed a neglected 40 acres in a Portsmouth industrial area into the beautiful urban oasis that is now Paradise Creek Nature Park. Additional grants are helping expand the park's educational facilities.

The Virginia Zoo

The Virginia Zoo's new animal wellness campus is teaching children and adults about animals, good health and nutrition.

Tidewater Wooden Boat Workshop

The Tidewater Wooden Boat Workshop uses boat building to transform middle school and high school students into self-confident, successful students with new skills to last them a lifetime. Grants from the Community Leadership Partners helped start and expand this nonprofit.
